ALASKA

What catches Alaska business owners off guard

Alaska is one of a handful of states that requires biennial reports rather than annual ones — which sounds easier until you realize the two-year cycle makes it twice as easy to forget. Alaska also requires LLCs to disclose ownership percentages for all members in their biennial report, a transparency requirement most other states don’t impose.

What really catches new Alaska business owners off guard is the local tax landscape. Alaska has no state income tax and no statewide sales tax, but individual boroughs and municipalities can and do impose their own sales taxes, property taxes, and business license fees. Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau each have different requirements. Operating across multiple boroughs without understanding each one’s specific obligations is a common and costly mistake.

Alaska's borough-by-borough tax rules catch many owners off guard.

Quick-Start Teaser

Avoid the biggest traps new owners face – from my 27-page full guide

Validate idea, choose entity (LLC/S-Corp/etc.), register with Secretary of State, get EIN, DBA, operating agreement/bylaws.

■ TRAP ALERT: Assuming Alaska has no taxes because there’s no state income or sales tax → Alaska has local sales taxes (up to 7.5%), borough property taxes, and corporate income tax — ‘no tax’ is a myth.

PHASE 2: STATE & LOCAL REGISTRATIONS

Register for state tax accounts, sales/gross receipts tax, local licenses and permits, unemployment insurance, new hire reporting.

■ TRAP ALERT: Failing to register for local borough/city sales tax in jurisdictions that impose it → Back-tax assessments, penalties, and interest from local jurisdictions that self-administer their own taxes.

PHASE 3: FEDERAL COMPLIANCE

Check federal licenses, set up payroll taxes (EFTPS), I-9 for hires, workplace safety (OSHA/state plan).

■ TRAP ALERT: Commingling personal and business funds → Pierces the corporate veil and exposes your personal assets to lawsuits and debts.

PHASE 4: INSURANCE & RISK MANAGEMENT

General liability, workers’ comp (required in most states), state-mandated benefits, standard contracts/agreements.

■ TRAP ALERT: Skipping workers’ comp insurance — Alaska requires coverage for ALL employers with 1+ employee → Fines up to $1,000/day, personal liability for injuries, and potential criminal prosecution.

PHASE 5: FINANCIAL SETUP & TAX COMPLIANCE

Open dedicated business bank account, set up bookkeeping/accounting systems.

■ TRAP ALERT: Not budgeting for Alaska’s extremely high cost of doing business (shipping, utilities, labor) → Cash flow crises are the #1 killer of new Alaska businesses — costs run 30-50% above Lower 48 averages.

PHASE 6: OPERATIONS & ONGOING COMPLIANCE

Navigate ongoing taxes/regulations, maintain compliance calendar, annual filings.

■ TRAP ALERT: Missing the biennial report filing (due every 2 years by January 2) → Administrative dissolution — you lose your LLC status entirely and must reinstate with fees.
